Teaser trailer and poster for REC 4 Apocalypse!

It's finally happening! The REC series has been a long-time favorite of mine. REC 2, and I stand by this, has been one of the few pure zombie movies that has seriously frightened me. And although REC 3: Genesis was a stylistic and thematic departure from the first two films, REC 4: Apocalypse will mark a return to what made this series so iconic. REC 4: Apocalypse is scheduled for a mid-2014 release.

*SPOILER WARNING: "Angela Vidal, the young television reporter who entered the building with the fireman, manages to make it out alive. But what the soldiers don’t know is that she carries the seed of the strange infection. She is to be taken to a provisional quarantine facility, a high-security installation where she will have to stay in isolation for several days. An old oil tanker, miles off shore and surrounded by water on all sides, has been especially equipped for the quarantine."

"Dead Island: Retreat" live-action short film

I'll be honest, coupled with the fantastic Dead Island trailer failing to represent what the actual game offered and the frustrating PS3 save glitch, the thought of playing Dead Island again has never crossed my mind. That game is dead to me...pun intended. Its sequel, Dead Island: Riptide, doesn't look to promising (or innovative). Needless to say, I'm a big fan of any short film pwnisher makes!

Why are zombies so big right now? - John Vervaeke

The proliferation of zombies in media is something that we as fans have certainly noticed. It has almost become a greater trend than vampires, werewolves, and other supernatural staples had ever been. In this video, John Vervaeke makes several very good observations about why the general public (beyond the original subculture fan base) have become so interested in zombies as a metaphor and popculture staple. Watch the video and let me know what you think! Do you agree? Disagree?

"John Vervaeke, PhD teaches a course called Buddhism and Cognitive Science which includes a lot on how and why people find meaning in life. In this entertaining off-the-cuff talk, he argues the reason why zombies are so huge in the media right now is because they are a symbol of the lack of meaning that many of us feel in our hectic and disconnected modern lives."

Although I am certainly infatuated with the zombie genre for reasons beyond what he has illustrated, his discussion of the "deeply serious point of this subculture" - giving expression to what is wrong (manifesting the loss of meaning, belonging, and self-awareness)- is certainly very interesting.

UPDATE: Taking a break, return, new focus?

Hey everyone,

I'm sorry for the inactivity! I've become rather busy and this blog has unfortunately been put on the back burner. This being said, I am sad to say that I will be taking a break from this blog. I'll be back! I just don't know when. This doesn't mean I will be absent from the zombie genre. I'll continue to be very active on twitter (@thedeadwalk).

*UPDATE: I will be back soon with reviews of Rammbock: Berlin Undead (2010) and The Day (2011). I've really missed writing this blog and have been itching to return. With these movie reviews, I will likely also begin to write more gear reviews (knives, packs, EDC items, etc.) and posts documenting my attempts to learn more traditional (and dare I say, post-apocalyptic) skills such as woodworking, hunting, gardening, and lock picking.

Stay tuned!

World War Z Official Super Bowl Spot

Will this trailer raise our expectations of Brad Pitt's upcoming adaptation of Max Brook's World War Z? In my opinion, NO. Although I'm sure the film is loaded with acting talent, beautifully disgusting visual effects, and of course zombies, nothing is a bigger turn off for a traditionalist like myself than "tidal waves of zombies".

Zombieland TV series? Is this FINALLY happening?

Apparently Amazon (Prime?) has picked up (or is going to) pick up the rights to the Zombieland TV series. Apparently it will have the same four core characters with two new ones. Will the original cast members return? Doubt it...
