It isn't even halloween yet, but I am pleased to announce that Cockneys vs Zombies maybe be one of the best new zombies movies I've seen this year.
The plot is quite simple. Foul mouthed and violent tale of loyalty and family, Cockneys follows a group of east London amateur bank robbers attempting to make a big score to help save their grandfather's old folks home. Their plan, however, is cut short when a zombie outbreak (of medieval origin), throws London into utter chaos. Violence and hilarity ensue.
This movie is brilliant! Rather than using the genre popular label "zom-com", director Matthias Hoene, who I unexpectedly stood behind (and did not recognize) in line while waiting to see the film (fail), labels Cockneys vs Zombies as a "zom-venture". A Londoner himself, Hoene went to great lengths to ensure that the cockney theme of the film was put to great use. I don't think I've heard the word fuck used in a zombie movie quite as frequently, and hilariously effectively, as in Cockneys. The violence and gore? Top notch, and perhaps better, than films with Hollywood budgets. There's something about good old-fashioned home-made blood that looks so much better than digital effects. Perhaps it's the time and attention put into making realistic effects, but they're definitely one of the films' highlights.
Who doesn't like funny, foul-mouthed, gunslinging, and gory zombie movies? As Deadheads was in 2011, there is no doubt in my mind that Cockneys vs Zombies is the zombie comedy (and maybe zombie movie) of the year!
5/5 dead thumbs up!
